The EOS C50 features a newly developed 7K full-frame CMOS sensor. The sensor offers exceptionally low noise, enabling it to excel in a wide variety of lighting situations and maximizing the camera’s full dynamic range. The high resolution and realism of 7K enable richer creative expression as well as greater flexibility in workflows, including oversampled 4K 60P
Full Frame 3:2 “Open Gate” Sensor Mode
The EOS C50 is the first Cinema EOS camera to feature open gate recording options, utilizing the full dimensions of the sensor. By selecting Full Frame 3:2 from the Sensor Mode section of the main menu, you can shoot using the full area of the sensor and then use that information in post to crop and re-frame your footage to the aspect ratio of your choice. This is especially valuable when shooting with full-frame anamorphic lenses.
Support for Anamorphic Lens Desqueeze
Anamorphic lenses have an elongated rear element that makes it possible to utilize flare and bokeh effects that cannot be achieved with ordinary lenses. The EOS C50 provides desqueeze magnification options including OFF/2x/1.8x/1.5x/1.3x.
Dual Base ISO
The camera’s full-frame 7K sensor features dual base ISO, allowing stunning imagery across a wide range of lighting conditions. With Canon Log 2 base ISOs of 800 and 6400, and an Auto Selection mode that switches between them automatically, you can maintain maximum dynamic range in nearly any scenario.
7K/60P Internal RAW & 4K/120P Recording
The EOS C50 records up to 7K/60P Cinema RAW Light with HQ, ST, and LT 12-bit modes, and supports XF-AVC 10-bit 4:2:2 for rich detail at frame rates up to 120P without cropping. For slow or fast motion, the camera handles 4K/120P and 2K/180P, while XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S codecs produce MP4 files with easy naming, folder structure, and full metadata.
High Frame Rate Recording with Auto Focus & Subject Detection
The camera’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II enables you to keep your subject in focus during slow or fast shooting at speeds up to 4K/120P or 2K/150P. This will help to ensure that even at high frame rates, your subject will remain in clear focus.
Simultaneous Crop Recording
When shooting for social media, simultaneous crop recording captures both your full frame and a cropped version in 2K. Depending on the shooting mode, you can choose from three format options: 9:17, 9:16, or 1:1, making content creation faster and more versatile.
Dual Card Slots
CFexpress (type B) and SD card slots on the EOS C50 allow for simultaneous recording even when shooting RAW. All recording options are recorded to the camera’s CFexpress slot with sub-recording and proxy options available on the SD card slot.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF II
The EOS C50 features Canon’s next-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, offering exceptional light-gathering efficiency and nearly 100% coverage across the sensor. Deep learning-based subject detection supports face and eye priority for humans and animals, and the AF system now includes birds, keeping your subjects sharp in a wide range of shooting scenarios.
Vertical Shooting UI
When shooting vertically, the display on the EOS C50 can be switched to a UI that supports vertical shooting. It also supports touch controls for recording start/stop from the vertical screen mode. Along with the shooting UI, menu settings and LCD brightness adjustments are also reoriented for vertical shooting to provide an easy-to-read layout.
Light and Compact Body Design with Detachable Handle
The EOS C50 is Canon’s smallest and lightest Cinema EOS camera, making handheld shooting and tight-space setups easier. Its flat, streamlined body allows easy attachment of mics, gimbals, or other accessories, while the detachable handle adds low-angle flexibility, two full-size XLR inputs with 48V phantom power, plus start/stop and zoom controls for professional audio and operation.
Ethernet and Wi-Fi Control
Built-in Wi-Fi and support for USB-to-Ethernet adapters provide flexible IP connectivity via Canon’s XC Protocol. This enables remote control through Canon’s RC-IP1000, RC-IP100, third-party RCPs, or the Remote Camera Control and Multi-Camera Control apps. The PL-RF mount adapter unlocks a wide range of PL-mount lenses for the EOS C50 and supports Cooke/i Technology metadata output, including focus, zoom, iris position, and lens model information. The RF85mm F1.4 L VCM is part of a series of “hybrid” lenses that focus on video performance as much as still photography. There is a VCM (Voice Coil Motor) that powers the focus unit. This focus motor works at an incredible speed and in near silence.
Its optical design includes one UD lens and one aspheric lens as well as Air Sphere Coating (ASC) to reduce ghosting, and Fluorine coating on the front and rear lens surfaces to help mitigate smudges. On top of that, this lens features the same dust- and water-resistance found on L-series lenses with seals around the Control ring, focus ring, zoom ring, operation panel, and lens mount.
This lens is part of a family of “hybrid” lenses that focus on video creation as much as still photography.
