Our Omaha team recently had the chance to test the new Tamron 17–70mm F2.8 Di III-A VC RXD for the Canon RF APS-C camera line-up. Our initial impression is that this lightweight lens is a versatile everyday lens and a welcome addition to Tamron's offerings.
Now, since it's for APS-C style cameras, it works great with Canon EOS R7, R10, R50 and R100. The flexibility you gain with this lens makes it incredibly easy to get the shots you don't want to miss. Its 17–70mm focal range gives you the flexibility to photograph everything from wider scenes and travel moments to portraits, details, and close-ups. All without constantly changing lenses. Which is a big win in our books. We think travel photographers will really like this lens!
Throughout our testing, we used it for close-up floral images, portraits (hey, Jack!), and landscapes. The constant F2.8 aperture gave us plenty of control over depth of field while also helping in lower-light situations. And because that F2.8 aperture stays consistent throughout the entire zoom range, you don’t lose light as you zoom in.
Tamron has also included its VC image stabilization, which makes it a strong option for people who shoot both video and stills. We also love the quiet autofocus and reduced focus breathing, which will be beneficial to creators who regularly switch between stills and video.
Another feature we like is its close-focusing capability, which allows you to get remarkably close to flowers, food, and other small details while still including some of the surrounding environment.
The lens itself is super compact and lightweight, which is perfect for everyday use and throwing into a small bag to tote around from location to location. Pretty nifty for a lens that can handle a bit of everything, whether you like to travel or stay close to home.
Now, let's talk about price, shall we? This lens, with a F2.8 aperture, is super affordable. The Canon RF mount and Nikon Z mount will both retail at $749.99. Which is an amazing price point for this type of lens!
After spending some time with it, the Tamron 17–70mm F2.8 feels less like a specialized lens and more like a dependable, do-it-all option. It offers a useful zoom range, strong low-light capability, and impressive close-up performance in a package that’s easy to carry.
